Our Story

Our Story

Maktaba Ya Watoto Katika Jamii (Maktaba) was born out of a deep passion for books and a belief in the transformative power of education. Drawing inspiration from community-centric library models in the United States and rooted in the Tanzanian ethos of valuing community and family, our organization aims to be a cornerstone of learning and support.

Our approach involves strategically placing libraries in communities with the greatest needs, starting with our pilot project in Mbagala. These libraries are more than just places to borrow books; they are vibrant centers for discovery and learning designed to bridge the educational gaps faced by young people.

Maktaba is deeply collaborative, involving children, parents, and caregivers in the development and execution of our programs. This ensures that our efforts are closely aligned with the community’s needs and aspirations. By sourcing materials and employing local volunteers, we support the local economy and build strong, sustainable relationships within the communities we serve. Making each Maktaba a hub of empowerment and growth ensures our impact is both meaningful and sustainable.

Vision

We envision a world where community libraries are catalysts for empowerment, enabling every child to unlock their full potential and inspire positive change in their communities.

Mission

Our mission is to empower and uplift marginalized children through the power of education by collaboratively establishing inclusive libraries in underserved communities. These spaces are designed to be beacons of learning, creativity, and empowerment, where every child can explore a world of books, access vital information, and engage in transformative exchanges of ideas. Together, we’re not just opening doors to literacy; we’re nurturing the dreamers, thinkers, and leaders of tomorrow.

Values

Our values are based on Swahili cultural tradition and wisdom.

Utu – The Swahili philosophy of shared humanity. Our work is grounded in our shared human experience and building connections. Our success lies in lifting the most vulnerable among us.

“Thamani ya mtu in Utu” – The value of a human being is their Humanity.

Jamii – Community. Communal living plays a crucial role in Tanzania’s culture, and we draw strength and inspiration from this shared sense of connectedness. Our work is rooted in working in partnership with the communities that we serve.

Uadilifu – Integrity. We strive to do the right thing every time.

Ushirikiano – Partnership. We forge meaningful partnerships with the communities and organizations we serve, prioritizing mutual respect, transparency, and shared goals to amplify our impact.
